The DeltaV digital process control system and distributed control system is widely used in many industries around the world. It has been successfully used in mines, life sciences, oil and gas, and process plants such as refineries, pulp mills, paper mills, food and beverage plants, and chemical plants.[1] The DeltaV system is a product of Emerson Process Management, a business of Emerson. The DeltaV system was created in an off-site "out-of-the-box" think tank to build an automation system that could integrate and leverage the emerging bus-based standards and OLE for Process Control standards developed at the time. The DeltaV name is derived from the engineering equation for acceleration: dv/dt, the change in velocity over the change in time. The intent of the DeltaV system design was to accelerate the process of planning, engineering, installing, commissioning, training, operating, and maintaining an automation system.

Architecture

The DeltaV system is a part of PlantWeb architecture, a digital plant architecture built on open standards like Foundation fieldbus, HART protocol, OPC and Profibus that uses the power of predictive intelligence to improve plant performance. Smart transmitters, valve positioners, analyzers, and other types of field devices contain this predictive intelligence and share it with the DeltaV system in this web. Abnormal situations can be avoided by providing early warning of these predictive alerts to operators and plant maintenance personnel. DeltaV hardware consists of a variety of input/output modules connected to a digital control computer located with the I/O modules. This hardware is proprietary. The controllers are attached to a larger redundant DeltaV plant-wide network which includes the PC-based engineering workstations and the operator workstations. Licenses to operate the control system hardware are independent of the hardware itself, and are purchased separately. Redundant control at the controller and I/O level is possible with the DeltaV architecture. Redundant control increases overall system availability. If redundant control is used, it is possible to update both firmware and control logic while maintaining process control.

Operator interface

As with all DeltaV applications, the DeltaV operator interfaces run on dedicated DELL PC hardware and Microsoft Windows XP / Server2003 operating system software. DeltaV Operate is the application program in the DeltaV suite which presents the interface to the operator and allows the operator to view and manipulate the process.

DeltaV hardware consists of a variety of Input/Output modules connected to a digital control computer located with the I/O modules. This hardware is proprietary. These controllers are attached to a larger redundant DeltaV plant-wide network which includes the engineering workstations and the operator workstations. Control software

The DeltaV software is designed with embedded advanced control models. Besides traditional PID control, which the DeltaV software can automatically tune, DeltaV advanced control can be configured to provide model model predictive control, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and variability analysis. These digital control technologies can reduce variance in the process, reduce startup time, eliminate off-spec product, and overall improve the performance of process manufacturers' plants. For batching types of manufacturing processes (often found in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, specialty chemical, and food & beverage manufacturing processes), DeltaV Batch provides phase logic execution, recipe execution, and campaign management. The software to engineer control strategies is based upon the IEC 61131-3 programming languages. The software packages described above all run on PC-Compatible standard (non-proprietary) hardware. Other programs in the DeltaV suite include:

  • DeltaV Explorer: Allows the user to view control system components and provides basic functions related to control system logic such as version control.
  • DeltaV Control Studio: Allows the user to create and edit DeltaV code.
  • DeltaV Operate: Allows user to create operator graphics
  • DeltaV InSight: Allows the user to easily discover their loop dynamics and tune process control loops
  • DeltaV Advanced Control: Model Predictive Control, Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks

Communication with instruments

The DeltaV system supports a variety of analog and Digital instrument inputs and outputs. Besides supporting traditional 4-20 milliampere current analog signals from instruments, it also supports directly connecting RTDs and thermocouples to measure temperature without additional instrumentation. The DeltaV system also incorporates a suite of digital communication protocols, including FOUNDATION fieldbus, DeviceNet, AS-Interface, Profibus DP, Wireless and HART.

Safety in hazardous environments

The DeltaV system can be used for control in processes with hazardous environments such as oil and gas production, refining and petrochemicals. DeltaV SIS provides a safety instrumented system which digitally diagnose the entire safety loop from the DeltaV SIS logic solver to the safety sensor and to the final control element.

Batch

DeltaV software provides tools and applications (DeltaV Capabilities for Electronic Record Management) to support regulatory compliance in these industries including audit trails, electronic signatures and secure access. This system is a foundation for compliance with the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiative to better risk-manage pharmaceutical development, manufacture, and quality assurance.

Enterprise

The DeltaV software provides integration to plant enterprise systems using industry standard application like OPC, XML, web services and SQL. Close integration with leading data historians and manufacturing execution systems couple with data management services also provide means of enterprise connectivity.

Asset Management

The AMS Suite of applications is a core component of the PlantWeb digital plant architecture. AMS Suite powers PlantWeb by using predictive intelligence to improve availability and performance of production assets including mechanical equipment, electrical systems, process equipment, instruments and valves. It can be integrated with inventory, scheduling and planning system of the plant.

There are numerous easter eggs in the DeltaV system.

  • Launching the DeltaV Explorer's 'about' page, moving to the acknowledgments page and control-shift clicking on the Explorer icon will play a short movie in Afrikaans.
