The Deducting Search Algorithm (DSA), also known as the Holmes Engine after the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous sleuth, is a mathematical formula that interprets the choices made by the seeker whilst looking for a particular piece of information. The basic concept is that the Seeker will leave clues to what they seek as they search, for example, commonality in the names or description of where they have looked, the time spent on each result before moving on or back. This information about the ‘sought’ is then used to filter and narrow the Seekers search, aiding in finding more quickly. At phase-one the engine gathers and indexes information about layers 1 - 4 of the target data whilst analysing the Seekers active search pattern (ASP). The DSA is applied to this and filters the results. This continues applying the ASP to the DSA and filtering the the next information layer.

Applications

The current thinking is that the engine can be placed into many common items including:

  • GPS systems allowing the user to find the route type of preference without configuration, for example diverting from the quickest route to a scenic route, or differing modes of travel car/cycle/walking or disabled access routes.
  • PC folder structures.
  • TV/Satellite remotes that find programmes of interest to the Watcher.
  • A Shopping Trolley that can find its way to items that the shopper wants.

Current Progress

A prototype for online grocery shopping, using the routine AVM (Animal Vegetable Mineral) is almost ready for consumer testing.
