At age six he quit playing hockey but then his father took him to Toronto where they met NHL legend Patrick Roy. Brown then told his dad; "I want to do what he does." then at age seven he returned to playing hockey and was the only fulltime goalie in his league, which gave him plenty of minutes. He is also an alumnus of Bishop Ryan Secondary in Hamilton, Ontario.
