The Dancing Banana (a.k.a. Peanut Butter Jelly) is a popular emoticon. By late 2001, the banana was already being used on several forums as a standard emoticon. Most of these forums would replace the typed text "" with the graphical image. As the popularity of the banana grew, hundreds of variations of the image had been created for forums or other purposes. These new images typically would have to be either uploaded or linked to, instead of replacing text. There is also a dancing pickle, carrot, apple, onion, taco, broccoli, Sonic the Hedgehog, Yoshi, Mario, Megaman, Lock ("lock this topic"), and Luigi, among many others. The Dancing Banana soon made its way to Television shows and began to appear as an icon in American Pop Culture.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

"Peanut Butter Jelly Time" is a Flash animation that emerged in the early '90s and became an Internet phenomenon. Based on a song of the same name recorded by the Buckwheat Boyz, the best known version of the animation was created by Ryan Etrata (usually distributed as a Flash clip) the repetitive chorus is often seen danced to by giant yellow bananas. The lyrics are:

peanut butter jelly time!
peanut butter jelly time!
peanut butter jelly time!
peanut butter jelly time!

Now where he at,
where he at,
where he at,
where he at?

Now there he goes,
there he goes,
there he goes,
there he goes.

Peanut butter jelly,
peanut butter jelly.

Now peanut butter jelly,
peanut butter jelly,
peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat.

Now peanut butter jelly,
peanut butter jelly,
peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat.

Now there he goes,
there he goes,
there he goes,
there he goes.
Peanut butter jelly,
peanut butter jelly.
