DJ Marky

Marco Antonio Silva a.k.a. DJ Marky is a Brazilian drum and bass DJ. Together with DJ Patife, XRS Land and Drumagick Brazilians are forging a new sound in drum and bass that has become popular around the world with releases such as LK and Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você.

Regarded as a drum’n’bass innovator under the name Marky Mark and then just DJ Marky, he was brought to the attention of the global Drum and Bass scene by English DJ Bryan Gee, head of V Recordings, who saw Marky playing in a club in São Paulo in 1998. Amazed by Marky’s scratch skills, he invited the DJ to play in London. This experience would result in a residency at the club Movement, a DJ mix compilation for the same club, work for the UK's BBC Radio 1, and global popularity. Marky got started in drum’n’bass in 1992, choosing a more hardcore edge, but the small audiences nearly caused him to give up. At the time, he was told that that kind of music was for only a few. In 1997, he went to London and met DJ Hype and Goldie. The meeting with Brian Gee was definitive for Marky’s conquering of England. In 1999, he was awarded "Best New DJ" by the British critics. The recording sessions of his album "Working the Mix" happened in his house, with two pick ups, one mixer and vinyl albums. When it was ready, he showed it to moguls at Paradoxx and got lucky. Marky has been praised for his sound articulation abilities, with elaborate mixings that connect one song to the next with amazing accuracy and also for the careful choice and combination of the repertoire. His appeal has become much more widespread after a 2 hour set on BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix in March 2004, and his album 'In Rotation', featuring several of the tunes from the Radio 1 mix has subsequently been released. Some of Marky's songs can be found on the videogame 'FIFA STREET 2'.

Live appearances

In 2006, DJ Marky played the Lovebox festival in Victoria Park, east London as one of the headline acts at what is becoming a fast growing independent music festival. [1]. His set was followed by the headline act Groove Armada at the event which aims to place dj sets and live performance across many musical genres in one open air venue with several stages.
