Crowne Plaza is a chain of upscale hotels catering to the business/meetings market. They are owned by the InterContinental Hotels Group. Formerly Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Crowne Plaza dropped the Holiday Inn name in 1994. The hotels are usually located in city centres and near major airports. Crowne Plaza once owned the Isle of Capri Casino resort chain. The first Crowne Plaza was opened in Rockville, Maryland, USA, in 1983, but the brand didn't break into the European market until 1999 when a resort was opened in Madeira, Portugal. Today, the brand represents 258 hotels globally, with 70,082 bedrooms, and 58 hotels in the pipeline.
