Council rangers are local law enforcement officers in Australian "Local Government Areas". Unlike in the United States, these local law enforcers do not undertake full-scale police roles and are usually involved only in enforcing local regulations such as litter control, animal control, dog laws, fire control, off-road vehicles, emergency management, public education and most significantly parking and traffic. In some LGAs, these rangers have the power of arrest as they have been made "special constables". West Australian Rangers Association A Council Ranger is also referred to as "Local Laws Officers" in some of Australia's eastern states. A Council Ranger/Local Laws Officer in Australia is the equivalent to a Municipal Bylaw Officer in Canada.
