Copenhagen Snuff is a brand of United States dipping tobacco (a tobacco snuff product), dating back to 1822. It is a finely ground tobacco in three traditional textures: Fine Cut, Long Cut; and the introduction of Pouches in 2002. Copenhagen Tobacco is packaged in 1.2 oz fiberboard can with a metal lid.

History

George Weyman, the inventor of Copenhagen snuff, opened his tobacco shop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, around the 1820s. In April 1845, Weyman's tobacco shop was one of the few businesses to survive the Pittsburgh Fire. Nearly two decades later, George Weyman relinquished control of the shop to his sons William and Benjamin Weyman. Following their father's death in 1870, William and Benjamin officially adopted the name Weyman & Bro. Copenhagen is now manufactured by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco.[1]

Appeal

Copenhagen products tend to attract an older group of people. While many other U.S. Smokeless Tobacco products have a tendency to attract younger people with various sweet flavors, Copenhagen has stuck by several original flavors. Some view Copenhagen Snuff as a classier product, often seen as an acquired taste, used primarily by veteran tobacco enthusiasts.

Style and Flavor History

There are several varieties of Copenhagen products. As of 2007, the brand consists of the following varieties(in order of creation):

  • Copenhagen Snuff: The original brand of Copenhagen.
  • Copenhagen Long Cut: Introduced in 1997, the Long Cut version of the original Copenhagen brand.
  • Copenhagen Black: Debuting in 2001, the Mid-Cut, bourbon flavored version of the original Copenhagen brand.
  • Copenhagen Pouches: Introduced in 2002, the Pouch version of the original Copenhagen brand.
  • Copenhagen Long Cut Straight: Introduced in 2006, Copenhagen Long Cut Straight is a flavored version of the Long Cut Variety.
  • Copenhagen Long Cut Straight was revised and rereleased on September 17, 2007 as "Cope Long Cut Straight." When released it was no longer in the usual fiberboard can but now packaged in the more common plastic can with a metal lid.
  • Cope Smooth Hickory: Released on September 17, 2007. Packaged in a plastic can with a metal lid.
  • Cope Whiskey Blend: Released on September 17, 2007. Packaged in a plastic can with a metal lid.
