Conway is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,809 at the 2000 census.

History

Conway was first settled in 1762 and was officially incorporated in 1775.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.8 square miles (98.0 km²), of which, 37.7 square miles (97.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.29%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,809 people, 692 households, and 512 families residing in the town. The population density was 48.0 people per square mile (18.5/km²). There were 749 housing units at an average density of 19.9/sq mi (7.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.73% White, 0.17% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.11% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population. There were 692 households out of which 36.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.01. In the town the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 31.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males. The median income for a household in the town was $56,094, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $41,146 versus $32,273 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,605. About 2.5% of families and 3.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.
