Colson Whitehead (full name Arch Colson Chipp Whitehead) is a New York-based novelist. In 2002, he received a MacArthur Fellowship, often referred to as the MacArthur "Genius" grant. He was born in New York City in 1969, attended the Trinity School in New York, and graduated from Harvard College in 1991. He is a journalist whose work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Salon and The Village Voice.
