Passenger services

2006/07

An hourly train operates to Motherwell and Cumbernauld. This is operated as a class 156 diagram. Furthermore, there are a few peak time services on the Argyle Line which terminate at the station, operated by a mixture of class 318 and class 334 trains. These services call at Whifflet before joining the "main" Argyle line at Motherwell, operating to Milngavie and Dalmiur.

Freight services

With a container terminal just north of the station, and the location on link between the West Coast Main Line and the lines to Grangemouth, Stirling and points north, there are also freight trains passing through the station.

Architecture and history

The architecture of the underpass is of early 20th century style, likely 1920s or 1930s. While it now serves only as a route to the Motherwell-bound platform, the archway, doorway and two windows (all with ornate brick lintels) filled in clumsily with later and uglier brickwork suggest it was once a thriving place for travel. The fact these are all on one particular wall hint at a possible link to the disused two-floor structure at the end of the station. This structure is similar architecturally to the underpass and has been bricked up in the same way. Unfortunately, records on this past appear somewhat sketchy.
