Clayton is a Borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 7,139. What is now Clayton was originally formed as Clayton Township, which was created on February 5, 1858, from portions of Franklin Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Glassboro Township on March 11, 1878. Clayton was formed as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 9, 1887, from portions of Clayton Township. The remainder of Clayton Township was absorbed by the Borough of Clayton on April 14, 1908, and the township was dissolved.[1]

Geography
Clayton is located at (39.657914, -75.087983)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 7.3 square miles (19.0 km²), of which, 7.2 square miles (18.6 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (2.31%) is water. Clayton borders Glassboro, Elk Township, Franklin Township, and Monroe Township.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,139 people, 2,464 households, and 1,884 families residing in the borough. The population density was 994.2 people per square mile (383.9/km²). There were 2,680 housing units at an average density of 373.2/sq mi (144.1/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 79.23% White, 16.05% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 2.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.28% of the population. There were 2,464 households out of which 39.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.31. In the borough the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males. The median income for a household in the borough was $53,219, and the median income for a family was $63,097. Males had a median income of $37,231 versus $29,063 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,006. About 3.1% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.0% of those under age 18 and 1.7% of those age 65 or over.
Government
Local government
The Borough of Clayton is governed by a mayor and a six-member Borough Council. The mayor is elected to a four-year term of office. The members of the Borough Council are elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year. The Mayor of the Borough of Clayton is Pat Gannon (R; term ends December 31, 2007). Members of the Clayton Borough Council are Council President Steve Carr (D;2009), Craig Conti (D;2008), Greg Green (D;2007), Melissa Hoffman (D;2008), Kim Robinson (D;2009) and Sam Teague (D;2007).[6]
Federal, state and county representation
Clayton is in the Second Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 3rd Legislative District.[7] New Jersey's Second Congressional District, covering all of Atlantic County, Cape May County, Cumberland County and Salem County and portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Gloucester County, is represented by Frank LoBiondo (R, Ventnor). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken). The 3rd legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Stephen M. Sweeney (D, Thorofare) and in the Assembly by John J. Burzichelli (D, Thorofare) and Douglas H. Fisher (D, Thorofare). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken). Gloucester County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. As of 2007, Gloucester County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney, Deputy Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger (2009), Joseph A. Brigandi, Jr., Joe Chila (2009), Frank J. DiMarco, Helene M. Reed and Dr. Warren S. Wallace.[8]
Education
The Clayton Public Schools serve students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district are Herma S. Simmons Elementary School for grades K-6 and Clayton Middle/High School [1] for grades 7-12.
