Civil War (college rivalry)

The Civil War is a college rivalry between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. The rivalry is one of the oldest in the nation, dating back to 1894 when the two universities' football teams first met. Although the college football game is the most popular rivalry, the two universities have Civil War games in every sport that both sponsor. There is also an academic rivalry between the schools on occasion, and competitions for community services such as blood drives take place often.

Civil War Series

The schools started to officially keep track of the overall series at the start of the 1999–2000 school year with the introduction of the Northwest Dodge Dealers Civil War Series. To determine the overall winner, points are awarded to schools depending on the outcomes of Civil War games in various sports. ^[1] The current point system grants:

• 2 points to the winner of the football game
• 1 point to the winner of each men's basketball game (two games are contested each season for a total of 2 points granted)
• 1 point to the winner of each women's basketball game (two games are contested each season for a total of 2 points granted)
• 1 point to the winner of each wrestling dual meet (two dual meets are contested each season for a total of 2 points granted)
• 1 point to the winner of the women's soccer game (.5 points to each school if game ends in a tie)
• 1 point to the winner of each men's golf match (two matches are contested each season for a total of 2 points granted)
• 1 point to the winner of each women's golf match (two matches are contested each season for a total of 2 points granted)
• 2 points to the winner of the best of three series in softball
• 1 point to the winner of each women's volleyball game (two games are contested each season for a total of 2 points granted)

For a total of 17 total points granted. Postseason matchups do not currently count towards point totals. The record as of the end of the 2005–2006 school year has the Beavers with 3 wins, the Ducks with 4 wins, and one tie.^[2] The winners by year have been:

The all-time point breakdown as of the end of the 2006-07 season is 69.5–66.5 in favor of Oregon State. The Beavers took a two-point lead in the 2007-08 season after beating the Ducks in the 2007 football game in double overtime.^[3]

Although determining the overall series winner is a fairly recent practice, all-time records for sports between the universities have been kept since play started.

Men's sports

Baseball

Although no longer contested due to the Ducks dropping their baseball program at the conclusion of the 1981 season, the all-time record between the schools stands at 150-146 in favor of Oregon State.^[4] The 2005 and 2006 seasons saw a rare unity between the schools in rooting for the Oregon State baseball team during the 2005 and 2006 College World Series. The Beavers went two-and-out (i.e., lost their first two games in the double-elimination event) in 2005, but won the national title in 2006 and 2007. With the recent success of the Oregon State Baseball program, the University of Oregon announced they will reinstate their baseball program for 2009 session, renewing the rivalry.

Basketball

The men's basketball rivalry is the most contested game between any two teams in the nation, with an NCAA record 325 games played as of the end of the 2006 season. The Beavers also hold the NCAA record for most wins against a single team (the Ducks) with the series' 180-145 record.^[5]

Football

The football rivalry is the seventh longest running rivalry in the United States, being first contested in 1894. The Beavers have won 3 out of the last 4 meetings. The Ducks lead the overall series at 55-46-10 as of the end of the 2007 season.^[6]

Soccer

The men's soccer teams have only played 3 times, with the Ducks dropping this as a sport at the conclusion of the 1989 season. The Beavers won all three contests played, leaving the record at 3-0-0 in favor of OSU.

Wrestling

Oregon State has traditionally dominated in this sport, leading the Ducks 103-24-4 in the all time series as of the end of the 2005–06 season. Oregon State has won the past 7 meets, dating back to the 2003 season.^[7] The Ducks have announced they will drop this sport for the 2009 season.

Women's sports

Basketball

The all time record between the women's basketball teams as of the end of the 05–06 school year is 52-17 in favor of Oregon.^[8]

Soccer

The all-time record in women’s soccer is 9-5-1 in favor of Oregon State as of the end of the 2005 season.

Softball

The all-time series in softball is tied at 75-75-1 as of the end of the 2006 season. The Beavers have won the last 7 games, spanning back to the 2004 season.^[9]

Volleyball

Oregon leads the all-time series with Oregon State 44-40 as of the end of the 2005 season.^[10]
