Chauncey Gardiner (Real name Chance) is a fictional character from the 1971 novel Being There. He was played by Peter Sellers in the 1979 movie. He is an orphan who grew up in the house outside of which he was found. Chance becomes a gardener in the house but when his benefactor dies, he (now a simple-minded adult) is cast out into the outside world for the first time. He has no given or inherited last name, no identification papers, and does not appear in any government database. He still lives.
