Charlie and Lola are the principal characters from a series of children's picture books by Lauren Child. The stories are all narrated by seven year-old Charlie, and focus on the antics of his imaginative and excitable four year-old sister, Lola. The books as well as the television series also emphasise the relationship between closely-aged siblings. The first "Charlie and Lola" book, I Will Not Ever Never Eat A Tomato, published in 2001, won the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal. The character of Lola was based upon an inquisitive little girl whom Child encountered on a train in Denmark.

Charlie Sonner

Charlie has the distinctive tapered, vaguely heart-shaped head distictive to much of Child's work, shared by all other characters in to series. Appearing to be around four feet tall, he has auburn hair and black eyes. Charlie's most distinctive outfit is his blue-and-white shirt with his jeans turned up, from the bottoms of which protude his bare feet. When outdoors or with his friend Marv, Charlie wears a variety of long-sleeved shirts, to which he always has matching shoes, but generally keeps the same jeans. In the upcoming series he wears a T-shirt, shorts and bare feet. He occasionally wears blue chequed pajamas.

Lola Sonner

Lola is almost the same character design as Charlie with lighter blonde hair but the same black eyes; she is about two-thirds of his height, and wears various skirts, tights and shoes, but also wears various crazy looking outfits, such as a sixties style "retro" costume and a ballerina outfit, but unlike Charlie she does not often change her outfit when she goes out. She wears full length patterned pale-yellow pajamas to bed. (NOTE: The Surname 'Sonner' has been verified by Lauren Child's Agent Caroline Walsh on 11th Dec 2006. It is often mistaken to be 'Summer'.)

The books have been adapted by Tiger Aspect into a cartoon series, using a collage style of animation which accurately captures the style of the original books. 2D cel animation, paper cutout, fabric design, real textures, photomontage and archive footage are all employed. The cartoons are also notable for their use of children's voices, rather than adult voice actors, a technique pioneered by the Peanuts television specials. (Both the books and the cartoon also mirror Peanuts' technique of never showing adults.) The first series of 26 episodes (11 minutes each) was first broadcast on November 7th 2005 on CBeebies ^[1]. The second series of 26 episodes (again, 11 minutes each) started broadcasting on CBeebies on October 2nd 2006 (with the morning broadcast also being shown on BBC Two). In the television series, Charlie is ten and Lola is five, and goes to school (her teacher is called Mrs. Hansen). In episodes of both the first and second series, Charlie celebrates his birthday (in "It's a Secret..." and "This Is Actually My Party"), although this doesn't seem to affect his age in other episodes.

60	Do Not Ever Never Let Go	Monday December 3, 2007	Lola and Lotta both love their tricycles but when Lotta is given her big cousin's bike. Now, Lola wants a big bike too! She gets Charlie's old one and is delighted. But when Lola gets to the park, she discovers that Lotta has taken her stabilisers off. Lola has to learn to ride without stabilisers too, and it's not as easy as it looks!
61	Our Shop Sells Everything	Tuesday December 4, 2007	Lola and Lotta have got a pretend shop that sells everything. They're having great fun until they accidentally sell Charlie's swimming goggles to Morten, their only customer. Charlie wants his goggles back immediately, but Morten doesn't want to swap the goggles for anything.
62	I Am Inventing a Usefullish Invention	Wednesday December 5, 2007	Charlie and Marv have to come up with an invention for a school project by tomorrow. Lola reckons that she's an extremely good inventor too, and keeps interrupting their efforts with ideas of her own. The boys have got to invent something really fantastic and time is running out. Just as they are beginning to panic, Lola the Inventor stumbles on a brilliant idea!
63	But We Always Do It Like This	Thursday December 6, 2007	When Charlie and Lola visit Granny and Grandpa they always build an extremely special sandcastle on the beach, and they always do it together. This time a little girl, and her whole family, is determined to join in and Lola's not too happy about it.
64	I Can't Stop Hiccupping!	Friday December 7, 2007	Lola and Lotta are practising their song for the school concert when Lola gets a fit of the hiccups. At first it's very funny, but soon she just wants her hiccups to go away. Everyone tries to help Lola get rid of her hiccups, but will they go before the big performance?
65	I Am Completely Hearing and Also Listening	Monday December 10, 2007	Lola thinks that she's good at listening. However, her not listening leads to problems at home and at school. When Arnold Wolf invites everybody to his house for a Batcat party, Lola doesn't listen to the instructions, and Charlie and Lola miss the party. Lola has to become a good listener.
66	But I Really Don't Like This Present	Tuesday December 11, 2007	Lola doesn't like the hat that Lotta gives her. It's itchy and it has 'dangly bits'. Even Soren Lorenson, Lola's imaginary friend, thinks it wouldn't be too bad if she lost the hat by accident. It's only when she really does lose it that Lola realizes her friendship with Lotta is more important.
67	I Can Dance Like a Dancer	Wednesday December 12, 2007	Lola is sure that she is a good dancer. But some dancing is a bit too swirly, ballet is too floaty, while tap dancing is too shuffly and not tappy enough. Just when she thinks she will never ever be any good, Lola finds a way of combining all the different dances and coming up with one big special dance all of her own - Lola dancing.

The Charlie and Lola Album

Charlie and Lola's Favourite and Best Music Record was released on 19th March 2007. The music is largely a development of existing interstitial and theme music taken from series 1 and 2. There are elements of easy listening, lounge, big band jazz, reggae, bluegrass, eastern European, sci-fi, Latin, classical and film music. There are 17 tracks plus one hidden track, with the very popular theme tune opening and closing the album. It is aimed at children and parents alike. Each track is embellished with extracts of spoken word taken from the TV series. The use of spoken word adds narrative to the music in the absence of sung lyrics. The album is not so much a collection of songs as a collection of themed conversations and fantasies accompanied by music. In many cases, the spoken word is manipulated so that it sits rhythmically with the musical accompaniment. This gives the sense of a vocal performance but without the normal song writing techniques of melody and rhyme. "The Bestest in the Barn" was released as a single on March 12th 2007. It features Lola and Lotta teaching various animals on their farm how to sing, dance and play music. This is the only track on the album which does not appear in any episode. Lola and Lotta do however appear as farmers in "I Do Not Ever Never Want My Wobbly Tooth To Fall Out". They also have a tendency to imagine that animals are capable of developing impressive human skills, as seen in "We Do Promise Honestly We Can Look After Your Dog" and "I Will Not Ever Never Forget You Nibbles". The album is a collaboration between various composers and musicians who write and perform for the TV series. Much of the music is programmed but many tracks feature performances by outstanding live musicians from London based bands – Menlo Park, Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland (see credits below). Four of the tracks have been animated by Tiger Aspect Productions: "The Bestest in the Barn", "Sizzles", "Batcat" and "It's Snowing". "The Bestest in the Barn" video is encoded as an mpeg on the album CD, and all four videos are included as DVD extras on the series 2 DVD collection.
