Fictional character biography

Prior to the crash

Born in Manchester, England, Charlie is the youngest of two siblings, having an elder brother, Liam. As a child, music was a heavy influence on his life, and his mother bought him a piano for Christmas one year. Charlie also learned to swim from a young age; though he was reluctant to enter water at first, he eventually jumps in with a little coaxing from his father. As a young adult, Charlie would often take to busking, most notably performing "Wonderwall." It is on one such occasion that he is passed by Desmond. On one particular day, as Charlie is walking home, he witnesses a mugging attempt. After intervening, the woman, Nadia, thanks him and declares him a hero. Later, Charlie and Liam form a band, DriveSHAFT, with Charlie playing bass. At first, the band fails to hit off, but eventually Liam confronts Charlie with the good news that they have landed a record deal. They release a single, "You All Everybody," which becomes the band's most renowned song. Since the band's big success, Charlie is the only member to not take drugs. While touring in Finland, Liam gives Charlie his ring, a family heirloom handed down to every first-born; at first, Charlie refuses to take it, but reluctantly agrees to keep hold of it. Whilst touring, Charlie scolds Liam for his controlling behavior and for being self-destructive with his heroin addiction, and tells him to cancel the rest of the tour. Liam, who had previously told Charlie that he is the most important person in the band, bitterly responds by snapping that "he" is the band and that no one knows the bassist. Sinking into a state of depression, Charlie resorts to Liam's heroin stash, becoming addicted himself. After the birth of his niece, Charlie visits the new-born, but Liam remains at home. Eventually the band's fame begins to fade, and resorts to appearing in a diaper commercial. However, after Liam's behavior gets them fired, Charlie begins working on a new comeback song. Charlie comes back to his apartment and is shocked to learn that Liam has sold his piano in order to enrol in a rehab clinic in Sydney; after Liam dropped his own daughter, his girlfriend flees to Australia. With Liam and the band gone, Charlie resorts to theft to support his heroin addiction. He charms a wealthy woman, Lucy, in order to rob her, but soon develops feelings for her, and decides to work for her father. However, his plan falls through, and Lucy leaves him upon learning of his original intentions. Later, Charlie learns of an opportunity for DriveSHAFT to embark on an eight-week tour, supporting another band, and travels to Sydney. He begs Liam to rejoin the band, but walks away when he declines. On the morning of the flight, Charlie wakes up in bed at a hotel with another woman and frantically searches for his heroin stash; after a struggle, he manages to walk away with it. He makes his way to the airport, being temporarily hindered by Hurley. Once on board the plane, Charlie starts suffering from withdrawal symptoms, attracting the unwanted attention of the stewards. Charlie races to the front of the plane, pushing past Jack, Rose, Boone and Shannon, and hides in the restroom in order to avoid being caught. Just as he attempts to flush his stash, the plane hits heavy turbulance, and Charlie takes cover in an empty nearby seat.

After the crash

Season one

Charlie lands with the fuselage section survivors, and is first seen wandering through the wreckage, in an apparent state of shock. That night, he encounters Claire, and hands her his blanket. The next day, Charlie heads into the jungle with Jack and Kate to search for the cockpit. Upon discovering it, Charlie heads straight for the toilet to retrieve his stash of heroin. After a close call with the "Monster", Charlie returns to the beach with Kate and Jack, along with the salvaged radio transceiver. Charlie then joins Sayid and Kate on a hike to transmit a distress signal, where he and the rest of the group discover a distress call that has looped for the past 16 years. Days after returning, Charlie again joins Jack and Kate, as well as Locke, on a search for fresh water. After stumbling across the caves, Charlie and Locke remain behind. Locke learns of Charlie's heroin addiction, and decides to help him. Charlie is reunited with his guitar, but hands over his heroin stash to Locke in exchange. After Jack brings back a handful of survivors to the caves, Charlie grows angry at him when he begins to feel a burden. After yelling at him, Jack is caught in the ensuing cave in. Charlie brings help from the beach, but begs Locke to give him back his heroin. Later, Charlie rescues Jack and, upon receiving his heroin, throws it in the fire. Upon ridding himself of his addiction, he eventually persuades Claire to move in to the caves. However, she soon changes her mind, despite Charlie's pleas, until she experiences contractions. Charlie asks Ethan to get Jack, but instead he kidnaps the two of them. Charlie is later found hanging from a tree, but Jack manages to revive him. Charlie withdraws himself from the other survivors' activities, until Rose breaks through to him. Up until Claire's return, Charlie busies himself in finding her diary. Soon after her return, Charlie is threatened by Ethan to bring her back to him, or risk having the other survivors killed one by one. He informs Jack and Locke, but their plan to patrol the perimeter of the camp backfires. When Claire is used as bait to lure Ethan, Charlie shoots and kills him with the gun that Jack dropped in the jungle. Charlie's immediate behavior concerns Hurley, who asks Sayid to speak to him. When Boone is brought to Jack in critical condition, Charlie makes himself useful by asking for the survivors' blood types, and is also present when Claire delivers her baby. When Rousseau arrives on the beach to warn the camp of the Others' imminent arrival, she kidnaps the baby, prompting Charlie and Sayid to chase after her. After being injured by one of her traps, and taking a handful of heroin-filled Virgin Mary statues from the fallen beech craft, Charlie eventually finds her, and brings baby Aaron back to Claire in the caves.

Season two

Charlie grows curious when Hurley emerges from the hatch, and begins questioning him. Unsatisfied with his response, Charlie asks Locke instead, and learns of the hatch's food pantry. Charlie asks Hurley for peanut butter to give to Claire, but is angry when he refuses. Locke suspects that Charlie is still taking heroin when Claire talks about the Virgin Mary statues. It is only after Mr. Eko smashes one in front of her that Charlie's addiction is exposed. Charlie takes Eko to the beech craft, encountering the "Monster" on the way, and decides to burn the statues and the beech craft. Upon returning, Claire refuses to let Charlie near her and Aaron. Soon after, Charlie begins having surreal dreams of Aaron in danger, and tries to warn Claire. He turns to Eko, who suggests baptizing the baby. One night, he starts a fire to distract the beach while he takes Aaron. He is soon caught by Claire, and is beaten by Locke. Following the humiliation, Charlie agrees to help Sawyer conduct a long con. Posing as an Other, he fakes a kidnap attempt on Sun, causing a conflict between many of the survivors. Sawyer offers Charlie the confiscated Virgin Mary statues as a reward for helping him, but declines the offer knowing that he has humiliated Locke. Later, he accompanies Sayid and Ana Lucia on a search to find a hot air balloon in the jungle. Upon discovering its location, and the described grave nearby, the three return to the hatch to expose "Henry Gale" as a liar. Charlie also bonds with Eko, and the two begin building a church down the beach. While Eko eventually abandons the project, Charlie attempts to continue on his own, with little success. Charlie finds the remaining Virgin Mary statues in Sawyer's stash, and decides to throw them into the ocean. Charlie finds some vaccine, and decides to give it to Claire. At the funeral of Ana Lucia and Libby, Claire clasps his hand as a sign of reconciliation. He is soon confronted by Eko, who asks him for some dynamite needed to blow open the blast doors in the hatch. Charlie reluctantly agrees, still harboring feelings over Eko abandoning the church, and takes him to the Black Rock. Charlie gives Locke a forewarning of Eko's actions before clearing the explosion. Charlie manages to escape the hatch just before it implodes. He returns to the beach with temporary hearing impairment. That night, he and Claire kiss, rekindling their relationship.

Season three

When Locke returns to the beach unable to speak, he asks Charlie to stand guard while he builds a sweat lodge, to which Charlie reluctantly agrees. Charlie decides to join Locke to search for the missing Eko, passing the crater left behind from the hatch implosion. After encountering Hurley, they find Eko in a polar bear cave, to which Charlie refuses to enter. He and Locke eventually rescue Eko and bring him back to the beach. Later, Charlie grows wary over Desmond after he asks Claire to move her shelter, and even more so after he saves the two of them from electrocution via lightning strike later that day. He and Hurley device a plan to get him drunk in order to get an explanation from him. Charlie yells at Desmond when he starts walking away, calling him a coward. Desmond explains to him about the flashes of him dying.

Upon hearing this, Charlie sinks into a state of depression. It is only after Hurley convinces him to help him start a van in the jungle that Charlie's spirits are lifted. He treats Claire to a surprise picnic on the beach, only for Desmond to talk him out of it. He refuses to support Claire in a rescue attempt at first, but Claire reassures him that he won't die, and the two release a gull with a message attached to its foot. Charlie then becomes involved in the apparent deaths of survivors Nikki and Paulo. During the investigation, he confesses to Sun about the staged kidnap attempt. When Jack, Kate and Sayid return with Juliet in tow, Charlie becomes wary of letting her help a critically ill Claire, but eventually allows her to. Later, Charlie joins Desmond, Hurley and Jin on a hike into the jungle to rescue a fallen parachutist. On the way, he narrowly avoids death once again, and yells at Desmond. The four discover Naomi hanging from a tree, and cut her loose. When Mikhail arrives at the scene, Charlie refuses to let him help, but his decision is overruled by Desmond. Upon returning Naomi to the beach, Charlie informs Sayid, but neglects to tell Jack. The next day, Charlie realizes that Desmond experienced a vision en route to Jack and Juliet's demonstration, and learns that Charlie must die in order to secure Claire and Aaron's rescue. Charlie accepts his fate and writes up a list of his top five highlights of his life, as a final gift to Claire. He volunteers to swim to the Looking Glass station, and says goodbye to Claire, Aaron and Hurley. When Desmond offers to take his place, he knocks him out and swims down to the hatch, where he is then taken prisoner by the two resident Others. Shortly after Mikhail and Desmond arrive, Charlie disables the jamming device. He then makes contact with Penny Widmore, who appears clueless regarding Naomi and her boat. Noticing Mikhail outside the porthole window with a grenade, Charlie locks himself in the room before the windows smashes, causing the room to flood. This was predicted by Desmond a few episodes previously. He manages to inform Desmond that the boat Naomi came from has nothing to do with Penny and makes the sign of the cross before drowning.

DriveShaft

DriveShaft is the name of the fictional band in Lost formed by brothers Charlie and Liam Pace. In "Greatest Hits", it was revealed that the band was named after Dexter Stratton, their great-grandfather. charlie is greats in season 1 episode 'The Moth', season 2 episodes 'Fire + Water' and season 3's 'Greatest Hits', covering the band's explosive chart success after their song "You All Everybody", struggle with heroin addiction and break up. In 'The Moth' it is explained that Charlie's reason for being on Flight 815 is an attempted Driveshaft comeback (which his brother rejects) in Los Angeles. In "Everybody Hates Hugo", Hurley classifies DriveShaft as a "one-hit wonder" and Hurley's friend also refers to them as "SuckShaft" while shopping at a music store. In "House of the Rising Sun", Locke mentions that DriveShaft's two albums are named DriveShaft and Oil Change. A recurring joke in the first series would be for Charlie to hint about being in DriveShaft, assuming everyone to know who he was, but for nobody to realize who DriveShaft were (the exceptions being Kate, whose friend back home loved the band, and Locke, who turns out to be a devoted fan and owner of both their albums). In a deleted first series season, Shannon admits she also knows the band, although she strongly dislikes them. In the episode "Greatest Hits", Charlie finally accepts that they only had "their moment in the sun", but is overjoyed to realize that with his "death", the band had finally become famous. During the fourth season of another J.J. Abram's produced television show on ABC, Alias, "You All Everybody" is heard playing in the background at main character Eric Weiss' birthday party. The band is widely considered to be heavily based on Oasis (particularly their perception and level of success in the US), with 'You All Everybody' similar in melody to 'Rock 'n' Roll Star'. [2][3]
