Charlie is a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It is the third track on the first disc of their double album Stadium Arcadium. Lyrically, it is very reminiscent of their older music (heavily based on rap and funk.) However, there are stronger rock elements in the song's bridge, chorus, and ending. Despite many rumors that the song is a reference to cocaine (Charlie is a name given to the drug), Kiedis has stated in interviews that the song is about a person's imaginative spark or inspiration.
Music Video
On March 6 the Chili Peppers announced a contest for someone to direct a video for the song through their YouTube channel. Whether the song and video will be released as a single has yet to be determined. However, it has a very likely chance for a single release as it appears to be a mutual favorite of the Stadium Arcadium tracks, among the band. On June 2, it was announced on the website that the winner was chosen several weeks ago and was informed, but the official announcement to who won was announced on June 18.[1] The winning video was released on their Youtube page. The winning director is Omri Cohen.
