Bernard Nadler

Main article: Bernard Nadler

Dr. Bernard Nadler is one of the survivors of the tail section and is married to Rose. He is played by Sam Anderson in eleven episodes.

Fredric Lane plays Mars in "Pilot: Part 1" with no dialogue, "Pilot: Part 2," "Tabula Rasa," "Exodus: Part 1," "Exodus: Part 2," "What Kate Did," "I Do" and "Left Behind."

Aaron Littleton

Aaron Littleton is the son of Claire and her boyfriend Thomas.[1] A phony psychic named Richard Malkin warns Claire that if she gives the baby to someone else to be raised by, bad things will happen to it. He later suddenly changes his mind and tells Claire to let an American couple in Los Angeles, CA adopt her baby. On the island, Claire is captured by the Others, who try to steal her unborn child.[2] Claire later escapes and gives birth to Aaron on day 42. [3] Aaron is kidnapped by Rousseau two days after his birth in an attempt to exchange Aaron for her daughter Alex, who was kidnapped by the Others from her sixteen years prior.[4] Charlie and Sayid go to rescue him and succeed. Charlie later has dreams that Aaron will soon be in danger and forcibly takes Aaron to the ocean to be baptized. While Claire temporarily disallows Charlie from being with Aaron, she gets Mr. Eko to baptize Aaron on day 56.[5] On day 92, Desmond prophesies that Claire and Aaron will be rescued from the island via helicopter.[6] Aaron appears in "Do No Harm," "The Greater Good," "Born to Run," "Exodus: Part 1," "Exodus: Part 2," "Adrift," "Everybody Hates Hugo," "Abandoned," "What Kate Did," "The 23rd Psalm," "The Hunting Party," "Fire + Water," "The Long Con," "Maternity Leave," "Lockdown," "S.O.S.," "Three Minutes," "Live Together, Die Alone," "Further Instructions," "Every Man for Himself," "Flashes Before Your Eyes," "Par Avion," "Exposé," "Left Behind," "One of Us," "Greatest Hits" and "Through the Looking Glass." Over fifty male and female blonde-haired, blue-eyed babies have acted as Aaron throughout the first three seasons.[7]

Cindy Chandler

Cindy Chandler (played by Kimberley Joseph) is an Australian Oceanic Airlines stewardess in a relationship with a Flight 815 passenger, the novelist Gary Troup. Cindy crashes with the tail-section survivors. Gary ends up on the beach and dies in the initial chaos.[8] She encounters Michael, Sawyer and Jin on day 45. Cindy is taken by the Others on day 48 during the journey to the fuselage survivors' camp.[9] She and the other kidnapped tail-section survivors are seen living comfortably with the Others on days 74 and 88.[10] Cindy appears in "Pilot: Part 1," "Pilot: Part 2," "Orientation" with no dialogue, "Everybody Hates Hugo," "…And Found," "Abandoned," "The Other 48 Days," "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "The Brig." Cindy was originally set to die in the pilot episode, however the producers enjoyed Joseph's portrayal and decided to bring back Cindy in the second and third seasons.[11]

Leslie Arzt

Dr. Leslie Arzt is an American ninth grade science teacher from New Jersey three times married.[12] On the island, he keeps a collection of native fauna in various jars, including a spider with venom capable of causing severe paralysis. He has apparently discovered a handful of new species on the island and claims he will be the next Charles Darwin. He complains about not being included in the various missions the likes of Jack and Locke go on, finally joining them on a trip to the Black Rock. He explodes there while handling dynamite on day 44. Daniel Roebuck portrays the character in "Born to Run," "Exodus: Part 1," "Exodus: Part 2" and "Exposé." Roebuck joined the cast as a guest star in late first season and rumours arose that he would be part of the main cast in the second season,[13] however Arzt was killed off in the finale.[14] An unofficial action figure has been produced, with an included backstory for the character written by a Lost writer.[15]

Minor crash survivors

The Others

Tom

Main article: Tom (Lost)

Portrayed by M. C. Gainey in sixteen episodes, Tom acts as a liaison to the crash survivors until they kidnap Jack, Kate and Sawyer. He is killed by Sawyer in the third season finale.

Alex

Main article: Alex (Lost)

Portrayed by Tania Raymonde in eleven episodes, Alexandra "Alex" Rousseau or Linus is Rousseau's daughter who was kidnapped by the Others sixteen years prior to the crash of Flight 815 and is raised by Ben. Alex aids the crash survivors in various escapes and eventually goes to live with them.

Ethan Rom

Main article: Ethan Rom

Played by William Mapother in ten episodes, Dr. Ethan Rom lives among the fuselage survivors of Flight 815 during their initial days on the island. Before he is exposed as an Other, Ethan kidnaps Claire for her unborn child.

Richard Alpert

Named after spiritual philosopher Ram Dass, Dr. Richard Alpert is Ben's right-hand man, who, oddly, does not age. In the early 1970s, Richard – one of the original "Hostiles" (Others) – conspires with a young Ben to gas the Barracks and kill the Dharma Initiative, with the Others moving in.[20] Richard works as a recruiter for a front company for the Others, called Mittelos Bioscience (Mittelos is an anagram of "lost time"). In September 2001, he recruits Juliet with the help of Ethan Rom.[21] Richard's discontent with Ben festers after Ben takes Locke to see Jacob and does not return with Locke.[22] He warns Ben that the Others are suspicious of him after the team sent to capture the pregnant women was killed and could misconstrue his departure to meet with Jack's coalition of refugees. Ben tells Richard to take the Others to the "temple." Nestor Carbonell plays Richard in "Not in Portland," "The Man from Tallahassee," "One of Us," "The Brig," "The Man Behind the Curtain," "Greatest Hits" and "Through the Looking Glass." Carbonell has speculated that Richard is 400 years old and indigenous to the island.[23] Carbonell will likely not soon return to reprise his role, as he is now starring on CBS's new show, Cane.[24]

Mikhail Bakunin

Named after the anarchist of the same name, Mikhail is a one-eyed member of the Others who lived in a Dharma Initiative station. Because he wears an eye-patch, he was referred to as "Patchy" by the crew before his name was revealed.[25] Mikhail was born in Kiev in present day Ukraine, which was part of the USSR at the time of his birth.[26] He worked as a medic in the Soviet Army and served in the Soviet war in Afghanistan. However, his military unit is decommissioned. He later replies to a newspaper advertisement and was recruited by Jacob, which eventually landed him on the island. He lives in the Flame, a communications station with a satellite, televisions and computers. After Flight 815 crashes, Mikhail compiles detailed files on each of the survivors. Sayid, Locke, Kate and Rousseau find him on day 77. They take him prisoner and he is apparently killed by the sonic fences that protect the Others' homes in the Barracks the next day. However, an alive Mikhail reappears on day 87 to Desmond, Hurley, Charlie and Jin. He saves Naomi's life in exchange for being let free to return to the Others. On day 91, Mikhail finds the Others and is beaten up by Locke. Mikhail claims that the sonic fence was not set to a lethal level. Mikhail is sent by Ben, who calls Mikhail a "loyalist," to reinforce Greta and Bonnie at the Looking Glass station on day 92, who have encountered Charlie and Desmond. At Ben's request, Mikhail questions and kills Greta and Bonnie on day 93. Desmond appears and shoots Mikhail in the chest with a spear gun. Later, Mikhail explodes a hand grenade, which kills both himself and Charlie.[27] Andrew Divoff acts as Mikhail in "The Cost of Living," "Enter 77," "Par Avion," "One of Us," "D.O.C.," "The Man Behind the Curtain" and "Through The Looking Glass." Mikhail is set to return through flashbacks in a future episode.[28]

Danny Pickett

Pickett is a forceful and the most violent member of the Others who supervised the construction of an airstrip on the island where the Hydra station is located. He was married to another Other named Colleen until her death.[29] He monitors Kate and Sawyer when they are ordered to smash rocks on days 69, 70 and 72. His wife Colleen takes part in a raid upon Desmond's boat the Elizabeth on day 69, and is killed by Sun in the process. Enraged, Pickett takes all of his anger out on Sawyer, repeatedly beating him and threatening to kill him for days. He almost succeeds, however he is ordered to release Kate and Sawyer or else Ben will die at the hands of Jack. Pickett pursues Kate and Sawyer with Luke and Jason, but he is shot dead by Juliet. Juliet faces trial for the murder but escaped execution and was only branded as punishment. Michael Bowen appears as Pickett in "Three Minutes," "Live Together, Die Alone," "The Glass Ballerina," "Every Man for Himself," "The Cost Of Living," "I Do" and "Not in Portland." Pickett may return through flashbacks in a future episode.[30]

Karl

A young Other, Karl is Alex's boyfriend. Worried that Karl would get Alex pregnant (and therefore, thanks to the nature of the Island, dead), Ben cages Karl on day 68 and, after he escapes and is recaptured, is forced to watch a brainwashing film repeatedly. Alex, Sawyer and Kate rescue him on day 73, and he goes with Kate and Sawyer by canoe back to the main island. Sawyer lets him go free once they return. He lives in the forest until Alex tells him to go warn the crash survivors of the Others' upcoming raid on their camp on day 92. He reunites with Alex on day 93 and they join the survivors' group. Blake Bashoff plays Karl in "A Tale of Two Cities," "Not in Portland," "Stranger in a Strange Land," "Greatest Hits" and "Through The Looking Glass."

Minor Others

Island inhabitants and arrivals

The following were not aboard Flight 815 or Others.

Danielle Rousseau

Main article: Danielle Rousseau

Rousseau arrived on the island sixteen years before the crash of Flight 815 as part of a research party. She gave birth to a baby girl, Alex, though her child was stolen shortly after by the Others. Mira Furlan portrays Rousseau in thirteen episodes.

Naomi Dorrit

Naomi parachutes from a British helicopter on to the island on day 87 and her life is saved by Desmond, Hurley, Charlie, Jin and Mikhail. She claims to be working for Penny to find Desmond and also tells the crash survivors that Flight 815 was found on the ocean floor, with all passengers accounted for and dead. Ben warns Jack that if Jack is successful in contacting what they believe to be Naomi's ship 80 miles away, everyone on the island will die. Naomi is injured and possibly killed by Locke on day 93[33], who unsuccessfully tries to persuade Jack not to call Naomi's ship. Marsha Thomason portrays Naomi[34] in "Catch-22," "D.O.C.," "The Brig," "The Man Behind the Curtain," "Greatest Hits" and "Through the Looking Glass." Among those who auditioned for the role of Naomi was Prince's ex-wife Mayte Garcia.[35] Thomason had previously tried out for several other parts on Lost, but was not cast. Lindelof praised her acting skills, saying, "to deliver massive [amounts] of plot exposition, make it make sense, and be wildly likeable at the same time [is not] an easy task, yet somehow she pulls it off with utter flair."[36] Thomason has not been told her character's backstory; all she had been told by the crew was that Naomi is "quite feisty."[37]

Anthony Cooper

Named after Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, Cooper is Locke's biological father and the man who conned Sawyer's parents, leading to both of their deaths. Cooper was unaware that he had a son (Locke) until Locke was born. Locke was given up for adoption. A couple of decades later, Cooper took the alias of Tom Sawyer and conned a woman, Mary Ford, into giving him a large amount of money. In response, Mary's husband killed her and himself. Their son James retained a grudge against Cooper, later taking the name Sawyer for himself. In his older years, Cooper's kidneys fail, and he needs a transplant. Locke's mother, Emily comes back asking for money once again, and Cooper agrees to help her if she finds Locke for him. Cooper bonds with Locke, before conning him out of a kidney. This scars Locke for life and Locke begins stalking his father. Later, Cooper cons two men out of $700,000. Afraid that they might kill him, Cooper fakes his death, then enlists Locke's help to get the money from a safe deposit box. Locke, who swore to his girlfriend Helen that he had stopped going to see his father, lost Helen as a result of this. Sometime later, Cooper begins another con with a woman, Ms. Talbot. Locke, having been visited by her son, confronts Cooper, and tells him to stop conning others. Cooper kills her son and pushes Locke out a window to fall eight stories and break his back, causing Locke's paraplegia. Cooper then disappears, presumably to Mexico. Soon after the crash of Flight 815, Cooper has a car accident in Tallahassee and is taken and imprisoned on the island. Cooper believes that he is in Hell and after Ben reveals that they have Cooper in captivity, Locke takes him to the Black Rock, where he is killed by Sawyer. Kevin Tighe plays Cooper in "Deus Ex Machina," "Orientation," "Lockdown," "The Man from Tallahassee" and "The Brig." Tighe was nominated for a 2007 Los Angeles Times GoldDerby TV Award in the category of "Drama Guest Actor," however he lost to George Dzundza of Grey’s Anatomy.[38]

Dharma Initiative members

Off-island characters

Christian Shephard

Main article: Christian Shephard

John Terry appears in ten episodes as Dr. Christian Shephard, Jack and Claire's father who died before the crash.

Sarah Shephard

Sarah is Jack's ex-wife. Eight months before her wedding to her first fiancé, Kevin, she is involved in a car crash with an SUV driven by Adam Rutherford (Shannon's father and Boone's step-father). When Jack informs Kevin that Sarah may never be able to walk again, Kevin leaves her. Sarah's back is broken, and her doctor, Jack, informs her that she will never walk again, however she does. They fall in love and marry, but some time later, Sarah has an affair and divorces Jack. Sometime after the crash survivors are rescued, Sarah is pregnant. Julie Bowen portrays Sarah in "Do No Harm," "Man of Science, Man of Faith," "The Hunting Party," "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Through the Looking Glass."

Penny Widmore

Penelope "Penny" Widmore is the great love of Desmond, and his girlfriend before he was separated from her by her domineering and extremely wealthy father Charles. Desmond is shipwrecked on the island while trying to win a race to prove his worth to her father and get her back. Penny is searching for the island, with two Portuguese men stationed at a polar research station. On day 93, Penny transmits a message to the Looking Glass Hatch, which Charlie receives, and she informs him that Naomi was not sent by her. Sonya Walger plays Penny[41] in "Live Together, Die Alone," "Flashes Before Your Eyes," "Catch-22" and "Through the Looking Glass." Carlton Cuse has stated that "Penny is an important character in the overarching mythology of the show."[42]

Jae Lee

Jae Lee is the wealthy son of the owner of the Seoul Gateway Hotel and the hotel's general manager. He attended Harvard University and studied Medieval Russian Literature. He meets Sun on a family-arranged date. He teaches Sun English at her request, and ends up having an affair with her. He asks her to leave for America with him. Sun's father finds out about the affair. Instead of telling Jin about it, Sun's father tells Jin that Jae is stealing from him. He orders Jin to kill Jae. Jin beats up Jae, but tells him to leave the country and never return instead of killing him. Jae subsequently commits suicide by jumping from his apartment.[29] Tony Lee acts as Jae in "…And Found," "The Whole Truth" and "The Glass Ballerina."

Yemi

Yemi is the younger brother of Mr. Eko. When they were young, the village of Yemi and Eko was invaded by guerrillas who command Yemi to shoot an old man. Eko saves him from doing this task by shooting the man himself. The men sense the potential for ruthlessness in Eko and take him with them when they leave, leaving Yemi behind. Yemi later becomes a priest and works to improve the lives of his parishioners. For example, he makes arrangements to procure vaccines twice a year for the village; thugs take 80% of the vaccines in exchange for offering "protection" to the village, but villagers acknowledge that without Yemi's efforts they would have no vaccines at all. He plans on moving to London to continue his education. The week before Yemi is scheduled to leave for London, Eko pays him a visit. Eko needs to transport heroin out of the country and wants to use the missionary planes of the church. Yemi initially refuses, but gives in when Eko warns him that his partners will burn down the church if Yemi does not cooperate. Yemi reluctantly signs papers to give Eko and his men the authority of priests. Yemi dies trying to stop Eko and the men from leaving; he is shot by gunfire from the army as the plane with the heroin begins to take off. He later appears as a vision to Locke and Eko on day 64, and he leads them to the Pearl station. The "monster" also takes his form (and was possibly the "vision" Yemi in the first place) and kills Mr. Eko on day 72. Adetokumboh M'Cormack acts as Yemi in "The 23rd Psalm," "?" and "The Cost of Living."

Cassidy Phillips

Cassidy Phillips was a recently divorced woman whom Sawyer conned. Despite being in love with her, Sawyer stole her money (admittedly, after a threat from his partner). Cassidy then went to Iowa and tried to con people using the techniques she had been taught, and met Kate. Cassidy later reported Sawyer to the police and as a result, he was thrown in jail. While Sawyer was in prison, Cassidy visited him and showed him a picture of a baby girl named Clementine, who she said was his daughter. Kim Dickens appears as Cassidy in "The Long Con," "Every Man for Himself" and "Left Behind."
