Cerralvo is a town situated in the Mexican state of Nuevo León.

History

In 1577, José Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva founded the village of Saltillo, and Santa Lucía, present Monterrey, and discovered the mines of San Gregorio, located in what is now Cerralvo. On May 31, 1579, Luis Carvajal signed the capitulations with the King Felipe II for pacificar and to establish the state of Nuevo León, in this contract was authorized to do it in an extension, that not to exceed to 200 leagues by side. The first human settlement in Nuevo León took place in Cerralvo, the first capital of the state. Cerralvo was founded on the year of 1630, then known as the Village of San Gregorio of Cerralvo, named after the fifteenth Viceroy of Spain, Rodrigo Pacheco y Osorio, marqués de Cerralvo (in Spain).Cerralvo Still Remains a Historic City. The historic origin of this municipality was the exploitation of the abundant mining resources in that epoch. The first settlers were dedicated to the exploitation of mines and the selling of Indians to the Spaniards. Cerralvo is home to the national park El Sabinal, which is the smallest national park in Mexico.

  • 1582- the first settlement in Nuevo León was founded in Cerralvo.
  • 1630- receives the title of Pueblo de San Gregorio de Cerralvo.
  • 1949- Gruma was founded as "Molinos Azteca", S.a. in Cerralvo.

Location

Cerralvo is located in the northeastern region of Nuevo León, in the region of the coastal plain of the gulf and in the agricultural and ranching-heavy northeastern economic zone that is formed besides by the municipalities of Agualeguas, General Treviño, and Ocampo. The head of the municipality of Cerralvo is found situated to the 26o05' north latitude to the 99º 36' of western length, to a height of 345 meters above sea level. It is closest to the town of Los Angeles. It limits border north of the municipality of Agualeguas, south with the municipalities of Dr. González, General Treviño, and Ocampo.
