Castelo de Paiva (pron. IPA: [kɐʃ'tɛlu dɨ 'paivɐ]) is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 115.0 km² and a total population of 17,128 inhabitants (2006). The municipality is composed of 9 parishes, and is located in the District of Aveiro. In March 4 2001 at 9 pm, a 116-year-old metal bridge linking the town of Castelo and Entre-os-Rios collapsed killing to 70 people, including those in a bus and three cars that were attempting to get to the other side of the Douro river. The Hintze Ribeiro Bridge disaster prompted accusations of government negligence, and the public works minister Jorge Coelho resigned shortly after the tragedy. The present Mayor is Paulo Ramalheira Teixeira, elected by the Social Democratic Party. The municipal holiday is June 24.
