Castel di Sangro is a city of 5,830 people (as of July 31, 2005) in the Province of L'Aquila, southern italy. It is the central city of the Alto Sangro e altopiano delle cinque miglia.

Geography
It is located on the Sangro River, in a valley in the Apennine Mountains, at Neighbouring communes include Roccaraso, Pescocostanzo, Rivisondoli, and Montenero Val Cocchiara.
History
Castel di Sangro was known to the Romans as Aufidena (a city of the Samnites).
