IMDb profile

Castaway 2000 was a show commissioned by the BBC in 2000 that took 36 men, women and children from the British public and placed them on Taransay, a remote Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides for a year. They were to become self-sufficient, grow their own vegetables, kill their own meat and become a community for the year.

The Year

Castaway 2000 had no prize on offer at the end of the year long experience, in comparison with Channel 4’s Big Brother, which came along later in the year. The show began with high ratings of around 8 million viewers, however the ratings halved over the year. With such a large number of participants from many varying ways of life, there were many arguments on the island. One notable clash was between a family of devout Seventh Day Adventists and a homosexual male. The viewers gained more interaction with the show later in the year, due to installation of webcams, live web chats and video diaries from the castaways. At the end of the year some episodes were transmitted live and the castaways were joined by presenter Julia Bradbury.

After Castaway

For most, life returned to normal since the project closed on January 1, 2001. Only Ben Fogle, who was heavily featured in the shows and comes from a media family, has continued to work in TV, appearing as a regular on The Holiday Show and Countryfile amongst others.
