Carroll County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 10,285. Its county seat is Carrollton6. The county was organized in 1833 and named for Founding Father Charles Carroll of Carrollton.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 702 square miles (1,819 km²), of which, 695 square miles (1,799 km²) of it is land and 8 square miles (20 km²) of it (1.08%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 10,285 people, 4,169 households, and 2,880 families residing in the county. The population density was 15 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 4,897 housing units at an average density of 7 per square mile (3/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.95% White, 1.72% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 32.7% were of German, 25.3% American, 11.8% English and 9.2% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000. There were 4,169 households out of which 30.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% were married couples living together, 8.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% were non-families. 27.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.96. In the county the population was spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 20.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.40 males. The median income for a household in the county was $30,643, and the median income for a family was $36,773. Males had a median income of $26,135 versus $17,468 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,522. About 9.70% of families and 13.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.00% of those under age 18 and 12.80% of those age 65 or over.
