The Camden New Journal is a free, independent newspaper that covers the London Borough of Camden. It was born out of a strike in the 1980s supported by campaigning journalist Paul Foot, Holborn and St Pancras MP Frank Dobson and the paper's editor Eric Gordon. It carries significant influence locally due to its high news content, investigations and high readership. It was named Free Newspaper of The Year at the Press Gazette's national industry awards in 2001 and 2005. Current journalists include Dan Carrier, Sara Newman, Charlotte Chambers, Roisin Gadelrab, Simon Wroe, Paul Keilthy, Steve Barnett and Tom Foot. Its chief reporter is Richard Osley. In 2006, the Camden New Journal - and its sister paper the Islington Tribune - broke the national story that cabinet minister Margaret Hodge had described the war in Iraq as British Prime Minister Tony Blair's biggest mistake. The Tribune is a widely-read local newspaper in the London Borough of Islington, contributed to by Peter Gruner, an award-winning environment journalist who worked for the Evening Standard, and reporter Mark Blunden. The West End Extra, covering the entire borough of Westminster, is also produced from the New Journal's Camden office. Both are also edited by Eric Gordon.
