CKQB is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts an active rock format at 106.9 FM in Ottawa and 99.7 FM in Pembroke (on a repeater). The station uses the on-air brand name The Bear. CJSB was launched in 1982 by Standard Broadcasting at AM 540. The station was initially a mixture of music and talk programming, then became 'music of your life' & lite rock. In 1988, the station adopted an active rock format (of which it still continues on today on FM) and the brand name 54 Rock. The AM station signed off the air on August 31, 1994 and converted to FM on September 1, 1994, moving to the 106.9 frequency, once occupied by CKO from 1977 to 1989. 106.9 FM The Bear goes by the slogans "Ottawa's Best Rock" and "The Classic Rock You Love, The New Rock You Need" and can be found at www.thebear.fm. Its studios are located on Merivale Road, in the same building as its former sister station, CJOH-TV. The station's music director, Kath Thompson, won the Canadian Music Industry Award for Music Director of the Year (Major Market) in 2007. (The former CJSB call letters there were used in Ottawa are now currently used at an FM radio station out of Swan River, Manitoba that was launched in July 2006).[1] On October 29 2007 Astral Media took control of CKQB-FM as a result of its takeover of Standard Broadcasting.
