BNA (The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc.) is a Washington, D.C.-based publisher of news and information on legislation, regulations, and court decisions for professionals in business and government. It is the oldest wholly employee-owned company in the United States. The company was founded in 1929 by noted newsman David Lawrence as a subsidiary of the United States Daily, now known as U.S. News & World Report. Lawrence chose in 1946 to focus his energies on that other publication and sold BNA to five of his top editors. They in turn opened up ownership to the rest of their colleagues. To this day, BNA remains independent, with ownership in the company open to employees and retirees only. BNA was one of the first legal publishers and is still among the most influential, reporting on nearly every aspect of the government's workings that affect business.[opinion needs balancing] In 2005, BNA offered more than 300 print and electronic information products to the legal and business markets. Completely free of advertising, those products are created by several hundred Capitol Hill reporters and legal editors and a worldwide network of correspondents. BNA has seven subsidiary companies and a national sales network. BNA has also forged strategic alliances with information purveyors LexisNexis and Thomson West, among others, allowing some BNA content to be accessed through Lexis.com and Westlaw.
