Published in 1826, Bug-Jargal is a novel by the French writer Victor Hugo about a friendship between the enslaved African prince of the title of the book and a French military officer named Leopold D'Auverney during the tumultuous early years of the Haitian Revolution. It was based on a short story of the same name that the Victor Hugo had published six years earlier while still a teenager.
