Buckley Country Day School is an independent, coeducational day school providing elementary education to 330 students in grades toddler through eight. Buckley was founded in 1923 and opened the doors of its first building in Great Neck to a class of twenty-three children. In 1955, as the school's enrollment continued to increase, Buckley moved to its current location in the Village of North Hills in Roslyn. It is operated on a not-for-profit basis by an appointed twenty-two-member Board of Trustees. It is chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. The school is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools.
The campus
Buckley resides on a 25-acre campus which includes three athletic fields, tennis courts, and a playground. The building houses all the classrooms, two science labs, two computer labs, an art studio, a woodshop, and three gymnasiums. The recently-completed Hagedorn Library Learning Center[1] contains over 16,000 volumes and is used by students starting in nursery school. There are also four swimming pools, which are only open in the summer during Buckley Camp,[2] and a pond.
Traditions
There are a number of traditions that occur at Buckley. Every 8th grader carves a square foot wooden plaque that is mounted in the hallways of the school. These plaques contain the name and graduation year of the student and are present throughout the school dating as far back as 1927.[3] Each plaque is designed and created individually by the student resulting in a very diverse collection. There are annual 8th grade and 3rd grade plays and every year the 1st graders perform The Nutcracker ballet. There is an annual fair in October which began in 1973.
Athletics
Red-Blue Field Day at the end of the year is where the school's two "red" and "blue" teams compete. This tradition started in 1938 and as of 2006 the Red team is leading 36 to 33.[4] Student records on field day are kept, the oldest being from 1981.[5]
Pop culture
Some scenes in School of Rock, such as those in the cafeteria and the teacher's lounge (Room One), were shot at Buckley.[6]
