Career

After success with Lille OSC, Gérard Houllier signed Cheyrou, at the time a highly recommended player, scouted for several months by Liverpool scout David Murray, for Liverpool in the summer of 2002 for £4.5 million (€ 6.5m[1]). On signature Houllier dubbed Cheyrou the "new Zidane". Unfortunately, he never lived up to this claim - although a spell of 4 goals in 5 games over the Christmas period of the 2003-04 season at one time suggested his Liverpool career may make a turn for the better. Arguably, the highlight of Cheyrou's Liverpool career was the winning goal he scored in the 33rd minute at Chelsea in the 2003-04 season. At the beginning of the 2004-05 season new manager Rafa Benítez sent Cheyrou on loan to Olympique de Marseille, on a season long loan. He played 20 times for the club, scoring 1 goal. In the 2005-06 season he was once again sent on a season loan, this time to Girondins de Bordeaux, with a view to a permanent move. He has been capped 3 times with the France national team. He made his debut on August 21, 2002 in a 1-1 draw against Tunisia.

Personal life

Cheyrou has a younger brother, Benoît, who plays for Olympique de Marseille. Cheyrou and his wife Constance welcomed a son, Nino on January 23, 2007 in France.
