Highway 99A is the current designation of Highway 99's original 1942 alignment. It has had the '99A' designation between 1962 and 1964, and from 1973 to the present day. As of 2006, the route has been de-commissioned as a provincial highway.

Route details

Highway 99A, with a total length of 50 km (31 mi), is a very winding route through the Greater Vancouver area. The Highway starts in Surrey at the first exit off of Highway 99 north of the Peace Arch. The stretch of Highway 99A through Surrey is known locally as the King George Highway (named in honour of King George VI). Here it serves as a route for commuters travelling to New Westminster, Coquitlam, Burnaby and Vancouver. It also serves as a route for travel within Surrey. The highway goes north for 8 km (5 mi) to a second junction with Highway 99, and from there, another 4 km (2½ mi) to its junction with Highway 10. The Highway goes for 2 km (1¼ mi) northwest to 64th Avenue, north for another 7 km (4 mi) to where Highway 1A merges with Highway 99A. From the 1A junction, Highway 99A goes northwest for 6 km (4 mi) to the Pattullo Bridge over the Fraser River, crossing from Surrey into New Westminster.

In New Westminster, Highway 99A goes 3 km northwest to 10th Avenue, follows 10th Avenue for 2 km (1¼ mi) southwest, then turns right onto Kingsway, where the highway enters Burnaby. Highway 99A then proceeds west northwest for 6 km (4 mi) through the City of Burnaby to its intersection with Boundary Road, at which point the highway crosses into Vancouver. In Vancouver, Highway 99A follows Kingsway northwest for 7 km (4 mi), then turns north onto Main Street at a junction with Highway 7. Highway 99A follows Main Street north for 2 km (1¼ mi), then turns west onto the Viaduct, then Dunsmuir Street for 2 km (1¼ mi) through the downtown core of the city to Burrard Street. Highway 99A continues northwest for 1 km (about ½ mi), along Melville Street and Pender Street, before finally terminating at its merge onto Highway 99 on Georgia Street.
