Background
The main feud heading into Breakdown was Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker vs. Kane with the stipulation being that Undertaker could not pin Kane and vice versa. This was done by Vince McMahon as an "insurance policy" to ensure Austin would not be champion.[1] Austin had feuded with both Undertaker and Kane through most of the summer, dropping the championship to Kane and re-winning it and winning the WWF Tag Team Championship with the Undertaker. When it was revealed that Undertaker and Kane where working together Vince McMahon decided to make the match to ensure Austin would lose and Undertaker and Kane would split. The second main feud would be who would be #1 contender for the WWF Championship. Ken Shamrock, The Rock, and Mankind had a #1 contenders match the RAW before but due to interference from the Undertaker and Kane, it was declared a draw. A steel cage match was set up to determine a #1 contender.
Aftermath
On the next night's episode of Monday Night RAW Steve Austin attacked McMahon as he attempted to announce a new champion. He eventually announced that a match would take place at the next PPV, Judgment Day, between Kane and the Undertaker with Stone Cold as the special referee. The Undertaker and Kane then attacked McMahon, sending him to the hospital with a kayfabe broken ankle.[2] The Rock went on to feud with Mark Henry before receiving the belt at the 1998 Survivor Series. Mankind and Shamrock feuded over the Intercontinental title before Mankind and the Rock would continue their feud, this time over the title.
