History

Box.net was founded in 2005 as a college business project, and launched officially in March 2006.[1] Box.net is based in Palo Alto, California, United States. Today, Box.net has over 1,000,000 users. In 2007, Box.net was announced as one of the WebWare 100 Award winners in the "Data" category.[2] It was also chosen by AlwaysOn as one of the "AO 100 Top Private Companies" for 2007.[3]

API

Box.net has an API for developers, which is implemented over Vanilla XML. Box.net API documentation is available at Box Enabled (API Site). Featured applications and free plug-ins are featured on the main site: Box Apps.

Services

Although Box.net allows linking to files similar to Yousendit, RapidShare and others, due to its smaller free file size limitation, it is most often used as a simple backup method or for online work group collaboration. Box.net Offers 4 plans to its users, separated by use case:

  • Lite: A free plan offering 1GB of storage, 10mb file size limitations and 10GB of monthly bandwidth.
  • Individual: $7.95 a month with 5GB of storage, unlimited bandwidth, maximum 1GB file size and various other pay only features.
  • Business: $19.95 a month with 15GB of storage, work group functionality allowing for online collaboration and other pay only features.
  • Enterprise: Custom built solution for large enterprise customers. Enterprise users have access to an administrative panel allowing complete control of regular accounts as well as personalized branding options.
