William Hartes "Billy" Fenton (June 23, 1926 – April 1973) was an English professional footballer born in Hartlepool. He played as a left-winger in the immediate post-second world war period. The highest level he played at was with Blackburn Rovers, but spent most of his professional career with York City.
Career
Fenton started his professional career with Barnsley, who he joined in November 1944.[1] After leaving Barnsley he returned to his native North-East, playing for Horden Colliery in the North Eastern League. In December 1948 Fenton joined Blackburn Rovers,[1] then in the Old Second Division. He was not a regular at the club, playing only 33 times in the next two and a half seasons. Fenton signed for York City in May 1951 for a small fee,[2] and in his first season scored 31 goals. This was a new record for the club, which was previously held by Reg Baines who had netted 29 times.[3] He was apart of the team which played in the FA Cup semi-final in 1955.[4] Fenton stayed with York City for several seasons, writing himself into the clubs' history books by scoring 124 goals in 279 games.[5] After leaving York in 1958, Fenton went on to play for another Yorkshire side, Scarborough,[6] playing for them in the Midland Football League until his retirement. Fenton died suddenly in his home in York at the age of 46 in April 1973. "The Billy Fenton Memorial Trophy" is presented annually by his widow Margo to York City's "Clubman of the Year".[2]
