Profile
Gender Female

Bertha "Bert" Miller Bauer was a fictional character on the CBS soap The Guiding Light. She was played by actress Charita Bauer from the character's introduction in 1950 (when The Guiding Light was still a radio serial) until her death in 1985. When the soap began its television broadcast in 1952, Bauer also played the character on the TV version, for a few years, appearing on both the radio and TV versions of the show (until the radio broadcast was discontinued in 1956). Originally the long-suffering wife of alcoholic William "Bill" Bauer, and the mother of Ed and Mike Bauer, Bert served as GL's matriarch for much of the show's run. In 1983, the actress was forced to have her leg amputated, as result complications from a blood clot. This was written into the show, with Bert Bauer suffering the same illness. She remained on the show until the she died of complications from diabetes in 1985. The character's death occurred in March 1986 (she had been said to be visiting her sister-in-law Meta in the interim), during a tribute episode, in which she was mourned by her family, including her sons, attorney Michael Bauer and Dr. Edward "Ed" Bauer.
