Bel Canto is a Norwegian music duo, originally a trio, fronted by Anneli Drecker, signed originally to Crammed Discs. Their first two records were licensed to Nettwerk Records in Canada. Their style has evolved over time from a gothic ethereal sound to synth-based pop influenced by world music. During the years from 1985 to present (2006), Bel Canto have occasionally taken breaks in order for Anneli Drecker to pursue a solo career and to perform with other bands and artists, as well as playing in films and theatre plays. Nils Johansen has composed music for film and television as well as working and performing with his other band, Vajas. Despite these hiatuses, Bel Canto are still performing together, 21 years after the band was founded. In the fall of 2006 they continued to perform, primarily in Norway. In 2007 Bel Canto will continue to work together, both by writing new material and by doing more gigs. At the same time both Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen will also continue work on other projects, Nils with Vajas and Anneli on her solowork. Side-Line reported early March 2007 that Bel Canto will start work on a new album in 2007[1].
