.hack//Sign

Bear is cool and collected, and usually prefers to relax in The World. At the beginning of the series it is shown that he likes to help out newbies in the game, and it is this what draws him to Tsukasa in the first place. He usually hangs out with either Mimiru or BT, and has met with the latter in real life. She seems to know him very well. As the voice of reason he is willing to believe that Tsukasa may not be able to log out, and starts to investigate about him, inside as well as outside the game. Eventually he learns from Subaru that Tsukasa has been online for the last 10 days. He is also the one to discover that Tsukasa is, in real life, a hospitalized girl who has fallen in a coma while playing The World. He keeps involving himself with Tsukasa as he realizes the Wavemaster's current situation is pretty dangerous, but BT tells him not to get involved with Tsukasa's life unless he is willing to take full responsibility. So he decides to go to the very end, not only for Tsukasa but also for himself, looking for a way to help Tsukasa to log out. At the end of the series he offers Tsukasa the choice of becoming his legal ward once he logs out.

.hack//Games

In .hack//Outbreak Bear meets with Kite and Elk. He is mistaken for Orca by Kite, but Bear politely corrects him. He tells them that Elk reminds him of an old friend, and gives Kite his sword as a token of their meeting. Afterwards, he can be found wandering around the various Root Towns with rare items for trade.

Intermezzo

In Intermezzo, Bear joins Mimiru and they travel to the bottom of an unbalanced dungeon where Mimika's remains lie.

Unison

Bear gets to the bar in Carmina Gadelica fairly late, right when the others are leaving the place. He travels with them to Net Slum where Helba is hosting a celebration. At the party he hangs out with BT and other characters from .hack//Sign and the .hack//Games, and encourages Tsukasa to go dancing with Subaru. He himself spends most of the night with BT and is always shown with her at Net Slum. When the others go off to dance, BT links her arm with his and they both smile. Later, during the fireworks his arm is around her shoulders. It has been suggested by some that this, and the conversation earlier at the bar, alludes to a possible romantic relationship outside of the world by this point in the story.

Ryo Sakuma (佐久間 亮 Sakuma Ryō?)

In real life, Bear is a famous novelist named Ryo Sakuma. He's 47 years old and his most acclaimed work is the novel "Annwn". He's divorced from his wife, and is constantly pestered by his son, a Wavemaster that goes by the name Teddy in The World, with demands for money. After the events in .hack//Sign he becomes the legal guardian of An Shouji, the player behind Tsukasa, and supports her financially as she attends boarding school.[1] Ryo Sakuma enjoys various hobbies, like reading books by famous authors, and going to the theatre. He smokes quite a lot, and has several encyclopedias in his computer, which enable him to research anytime. In Unison, the conversation at the bar, and certain scenes at Net Slum suggest that Bear and BT start a relationship in real life after the events in .hack//Sign
