Battle Arena Toshinden (バトルアリーナ闘神伝, Batoru Arīna Tōshinden^?) is a fighting game for PC, PlayStation and some other formats. It was one of the first fighting games to boast polygonal characters in a 3D battle arena, rather than the traditional side-to-side fighting space that had been popular since Street Fighter II. The player could use the L/R trigger buttons to step "toward" or "away from" the camera to dodge attacks or get a better angle for an offensive strike. It was an early killer game for the PlayStation, and Sony promoted it eagerly. However, they soon left the series, which was published by Playmates Interactive. By that time, fighting games like Tekken started emerging and Battle Arena Toshinden quickly lost popularity and was completely forgotten by the public after spawning Battle Arena Toshinden 2, 3, and 4. Battle Arena Toshinden was the first 3D weapons fighter, and was succeeded in spirit by Soul Edge and other games of the genre. The upcoming fifth installment of the Toshinden Series won't be a prequel or an remake. Electronic Gaming Monthly named Battle Arena Toshinden "the most overrated game of all time."

Story

Eight travelling fighters brought together by a common destiny now meet at the Battle Arena Toshinden. Many years have passed since this tournament, known only to those in the underworld was last held. Some fighters have come for personal glory. Others have come to fight for those they love, but all will do their best to be victorious in this tournament that will decide their fortunes...

Toshinden Remix (Sega Saturn)

The original Toshinden PS1 game was ported by Sega to the Sega Saturn under the name Toh Shin Den S in Japan and Battle Arena Toshinden Remix in the United States and Europe. The gameplay is virtually identical to the PlayStation version (it does play a little differently). However the graphics and speed of the game are notably weaker/slower. The voices were also redone with accents that were more over the top than the original. A couple of new things were added, an exclusive new character called Cupido and a new story mode (which perhaps spoils some of the twists in PS1 Toshinden 2).

Toshinden PC (PC)

Developed by Digital Dialect, this is a DOS port of PS1 Toshinden that adds an exclusive new character, Earthworm Jim, complete with unique arena music (however he functions exactly the same as Rungo). The graphics took a considerable hit (i.e much more than the Saturn port (though it does support slightly higher resolutions than the PS1 original), but the game speed assuming the computer is up to it is comparable to the PS1 original. The game sadly has some notable bugs though including opponents not reacting to multiple hits (though they still take damage). Interestingly the PC port uses the Japanese PS1 versions voices and music in all regions (unlike the original PS1 version), though the sound quality is much inferior to the Japanese PS1 version. There also exists a German specific version of the game, though what differences it has to the non German version aren't known.
