Bancroft is a town in Putnam County, West Virginia, along the Kanawha River. The population was 367 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Bancroft is located at (38.510887, -81.841697)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is land and 6.67% is water.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 367 people, 159 households, and 114 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,012.1/km² (2,597.6/mi²). There were 185 housing units at an average density of 510.2/km² (1,309.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.09% White, 0.27% Native American, and 1.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population. There were 159 households out of which 24.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.75. In the town the population was spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.0 males. The median income for a household in the town was $28,833, and the median income for a family was $30,313. Males had a median income of $35,417 versus $20,417 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,888. About 5.5% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.5% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
