History

Balfour was founded in 1899.

Geography

Balfour is located at 47°57′4″N, 100°32′1″W (47.951113, -100.533608)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land. Balfour is located on US Route 52 southeast of Minot.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 20 people, 14 households, and 6 families residing in the city. The population density was 41.2 people per square mile (15.8/km²). There were 21 housing units at an average density of 43.2/sq mi (16.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.00% of the population. There were 14 households out of which none had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.7% were married couples living together, and 57.1% were non-families. 57.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.43 and the average family size was 2.00. In the city the population was spread out with 5.0% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 45.0% from 45 to 64, and 25.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 54 years. For every 100 females there were 122.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 122.2 males. The median income for a household in the city was $7,917, and the median income for a family was $20,625. Males had a median income of $0 versus $0 for females. The per capita income for the city was $5,408. There are 33.3% of families living below the poverty line and 69.2% of the population, including no under eighteens and none of those over 64.
