"Babylon" was the second single released by David Gray from his fourth album, 1999's White Ladder. After two near misses with "Late Night Radio" in 1996 and "Please Forgive Me" in 1999, the song gave David his first major hit single in the UK when it peaked at #5 in the UK Singles Chart in August 2000. Whilst it does not reference the city of Babylon, the song's meaning focuses on the nightlife of London and its clubs, pubs and bars. The song tells a story of a man who misses his partner and feels lonely at home while the city is alive at night. The song was played at the UK leg of Live Earth with Damien Rice at Wembley Stadium, London.
