Azariah Cutting Flagg (1790 - November 24, 1873) was a prominent politician in New York State from the 1820s through the 1850s. He was one of the four leading members of the Albany Regency.
Life
A native of Clinton County, New York, Flagg began his political career as a member of the New York State Assembly from that county in 1823 and 1824 when he was the editor of the Plattsburgh Republican at Plattsburgh, New York. He was appointed Secretary of State of New York in 1826, then New York State Comptroller in 1834. His final political office was New York City Comptroller, a post he held from 1853 to 1859. Flagg began as a member of the Democratic Party, but broke away in 1842 to join first the Barnburners, then the Free Soil Party in the late 1840s, and finally the nascent Republican Party in the mid-1850s.
