Ayyanthole is a ward under the jurisdiction of Thrissur Municipal Corporation in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Ayyanthole is the administrative centre for the District of Thrissur. At about 3 km from the commercial center of the city, Ayyanthole is well away from the hustle and bustle of the markets. It houses the various state government offices as well as the District and Sessions Courts and this "Civil Station" as popularly called is the main commercial hub for Ayyanthole.
The central point of Ayyanthole is “Ayyanthole Ground”, so-called because of a football ground in the vicinity. (also known as Karshaka Nagar). The name Karshaka Nagar is a tribute to the agricultural past of the area. Almost all the native families here have an agrarian background. Ayyanthole, as with other places in Kerala, had large areas of Paddy cultivation. These agricultural lands have now become residential colonies.
The residents of this ward are predominantly government servants. In recent times, Ayyanthole has become one of the most popular residential areas in Thrissur. Ayyanthole is now witnessing tremendous development in housing after the announcement of an international residential enclave nearby.
The Government Law College, one of the three run by the government of Kerala, is at Ayyanthole. The college is affiliated to the University of Calicut and offers graduate courses in law (LLB).
Schools include the Vocational Higher Secondary School, Government High School, Nirmala Convent Upper Primary School and Mata Amritanandamayi School.
There are two libraries in Ayyanthole. The Puthurkara Desiya Vayanashala and The Appan Thampuran Memorial Library. Both have been instrumental in fostering knowledge and cultural traditions of the people in the area.
The religious places in Ayyanthole are: The Karthyayani, Thrikumaramkudom Temple, the Manathitta Mahavishnu, the Thenjithukavu, Shri Thiruvanath temples. There is also a Catholic church (St Mary's).
The Karthyayani Temple is one of the prominent places of worship in the area. It is believed that the Devi Karthyayani, the reigning deity of the temple is the daughter of Nanda and Yasoda, who slipped away from the hands of Kamsa. The yearly Karthika Vilakku festival celebrated in this temple draws crowds. This temple is one of the participants in the popular and extravagant festival of Thrissur Pooram. Ayyanthole also hold the second Indoor stadium of Thrissur, under the patronage of District Officers club.
