Location of Avalon, Mississippi

Avalon is an unincorporated community in Carroll County, Mississippi, United States, known as the home of the great bluesman Mississippi John Hurt. However in 2006 Avalon is nothing but a spot in the road on Highway 7 about 12 miles north of Greenwood with a small green highway sign depicting Avalon, and a commemorative Highway marker placed by Carroll County recognizing John as a great bluesman. Avalon today just has the remains of a store that used to be there, and a few houses. You actually have to take County road 41 from there to the Hill country and the community of Valley before you get close to John's original home, and then you have to go miles on dirt roads into the back country to find his original home which was moved to a family property site, and now is the Mississippi John Hurt museum, and also the site of his Blues and Gospel Festival every July 3rd and 4th. Coordinates: 33°39′18″N, 90°05′08″W
