The Atlas District (also known as the Atlas or the H Street District) is an arts and entertainment district located in the Near Northeast neighborhood of Washington, DC, roughly a mile northeast of Union Station. It is centered along the resurgent H Street Corridor spanning from 12th Street to Maryland Ave, NE. The name is not historical. It is part of a neighborhood branding campaign centered around the revitalized Atlas Theater. The area suffered economic setbacks after the riots following Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1968 assassination. The neighbor began a resurgence after Joe Englert announced plans in 1995 to opened open eight bars and music venues on H Street. The area is served by the X2 Metrobus. The city has also tentatively has explored installing a trolley system running up H Street from Union Station to Benning Road.
