Astrological compatibility, also known as synastry, describes how one particular Zodiac sign is compatible with another. Compatibility between two signs was described in words or rated in numbers to give an idea on how, according to relationship astrology experts, one person is compatible or incompatible with another one, based on their Zodiac signs. Compatibility between two Zodiac signs is always approached within a particular branch of astrological tradition, be it Chinese astrology, Western astrology or Vedic astrology.

Compatibility in Chinese astrology
Chinese astrology has an elaborate system describing compatibility between individuals based on their hour, day, week, month and year of birth according to ancient tradition. According to Chinese astrological tradition twelve Chinese signs are divided into four groups, or "Triangles of Affinity" (Theodora Lau: The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes).
Compatibility in Western astrology
To define compatibility between two signs Western astrology defines a concept that twelve Western Zodiac signs are related to four different Western element groups:
- Fire: (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
- Earth: (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
- Air: (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
- Water: (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).
Aspects that these elements form between each other show the character of the relationship between the two individuals. Major compatibility aspects are: conjunction, trine, sextile, square and opposition. To make up a more precise evaluation of astrological compatibility between particular individuals, stellar signs are not the only ones to take into consideration. Astrological compatibility can be analyzed with the help of the detailed insight on the position of the planets in certain signs and their aspects. Interactions formed between the natal charts of the taken individuals are considered as well. These give a more accurate view on how a relationship can be characterized on emotional, sexual or mental levels. The symbol for man is the symbol for Mars, the symbol for women is the symbol for Venus therefore there is an astrological characterisation of the basic difference between men and women. In compatibility for love it has to be asked what kind of love are we talking about. Mars is the planet of passion and therefore is connected with erotic love (masculine). Venus is the planet connected with romantic love and beauty(feminine). Metaphysically the natal position of Venus tells us what activates or affects the heart centre, whereas the position of Mars determines the activation of the sexual centre (navel chakra). Keeping true to the classic notions of Mars and Venus it is possible to construct Cupids formulas: His Mars sign = Her Moon sign. Her Venus sign = His Sun sign. These formulas show the "ideal" conjunctions. A real world example of this are the couple Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf. If a conjunction is not possible the next best aspect is the quincunx, specifically 7 signs apart. For example if his Sun sign is virgo a good match would be her Venus in aquarius. Variations on this formula can also give good matches such as His mars sign = her Jupiter sign. The exact planets involved in the conjunctions or aspects logically determine the nature of the relationship. A non traditional but systematic hierarchy of aspects is possible based on modern music theory. This is because both astrology and music are base 12 systems. See the article Consonance and dissonance. From most harmonious aspect to least we have: conjunction, quincunx, sextile, square , trine, semisextile and opposition.
Compatibility in Indian astrology
Hindu / Indian have unique system of examining compatibility based on horoscopes of the aspirant couple. Horoscope matching is an art of the highest ingenuity of an astrologer. All the factors cannot be detailed in small space like this. The fundamental concept of matching horoscopes emanates from constellations occupied by the Moon at the time of births of bride and bridegroom. Individuals inherit qualities of the birth constellation. Various constellations represent different nature in respect of their casts, animals presented by them, sex, Gana (God / man / demon), humour, birds ruled, primordial elements, Gotra, directions ruled, consonants and vowels, mutual harmony and repellent with certain stars, beneficence to the other stars by virtue of mutual distance etc. In addition host of other factors like, longevity of the individuals, character (sexual), widowhood, poverty, progeny, their body status, radical strengths and indications, planetary nature and afflictions, currency of major and minor periods, Marakaas (death inflicting planets), placement of Mars in their nativity (Mangal Dosha), time of query, omen (Shagun), antidotes, propitiations, auspicious time for marriage etc. should be examined to arrive at suitable union of the couple.
Based on the birth constellations following aspects are examined Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Gana, Graha Maitri, Bhakoota, Nadi, Mahendra, Vedha, Rajju, Stree Deergha, Linga, Gotra, Pakshi, Yoni, Chandra Yoga, Ayya Varga and Yujja for checking compatibility. In another system, only eight of these factors are given importance and are assigned numerical values - Varna (1 point), Vashya (2 Points), Tara (3 points), Yoni (4 points), Graha Maitri (5 points), Gana (6 points), Bhakoota (7 points) and Nadi (8 points). The total of these factors adds up to 36 points and horoscope is considered to be matched if the compatibility score is more than 18. Significance of various aspects in compatibility are as follows:
- Varna : Grade of spiritual development, obedience
- Vashya : Mutual control – friendship.
- Tara : Mutual beneficence-luck-auspiciousness
- Yoni : Sexual aspects, affinity, urge, compatibility.
- Graha Maitri : Psychological disposition, friendship.
- Gana : Nature: Dev – Manush – Raakshas
- Bhakoota : Children, growth of family.
- Nadi: Temperaments, hereditary (astrological), affliction and death to other
- Mahendra : Promotes attachments, increase in longevity.
- Stree – Dergha : Service to husband.
- Rajju : Felicity and duration of married life.
- Vedha – Varga : Mutual repellence and enmity.
- Varga : Mutual friendship / enmity judged from their names
- Yujja : Type of mutual love – from one side – both sides.
Based on the above aspects, mathematical computation is done to arrive at the totality of the matching. In certain cases need based matching is done and the astrologer has to use his skills in examining compatibility. It is felt essential to match the horoscopes before further marriage negotiations are done. The above system is in practice for the last two millennia.
