The Aquinas Institute is a private, coeducational high school in Rochester, New York since 1902. It is located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester. It has stood at its current location on Dewey Avenue since 1925. Over 18,000 graduates have graduated since its founding. Notable alumni include Don Holleder, Dick Buerkle (former world record holder in the Indoor 1 mile) and Bishop Louis Vezelis, OFM. The school is noted for their exemplary work in humanist organizations, such as Amnesty International, the Cesar Chavez movement, collaborative work with various Jewish Community Organizations working towards Tikkum Olam, and the Al Sigl/Mary Cariola Centers. The Aquinas Institute has been given extensive recognition and awards for the strength of its Fine Arts Program, boasts many fine alumni currently working in the music/entertainment and visual arts industries. In the early 1990's, there was a resurgence of thought-provoking literary efforts that bordered on controversial, namely in the creative arts journal The Arion, the student newspaper Maroon and White, and in the secretive nuances of the yearbook Arete. The general creative arts & writing program produced strong works in the same literary magazine, newspaper, and yearbook areas that propelled its many student writers into the fields of journalism, social activism, and awareness-invoking fields, such as the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, Make Poverty History, and Save the Children. --- The Aquinas football team won its first New York State Championship in 1998. Notable (active) Sports alumni include Kevin McMahan ("Mr. Irrelevant") and Brian Gionta. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wegman - Napier Building, an extension of the main school building, houses many Science labs for biology and chemistry classes, as well as the "new gym" with its brand new floor, redone over the 2007 summer. Aquinas has also refurbished their Biology labs during 2007, and is currently in the process of building a 30,000 sqft field house. This is scheduled to be completed by spring of 2008, and will bring fitness center equipment, a weight room, health offices, and more space for practices.
