Background

The song "Apologize" was originally released by alternative rock group OneRepublic in 2006. The vocalist and writer of the song is Ryan Tedder, the lead singer of the band. According to the band's MySpace site, the song "explores the personal pain of multiple relationships gone awry and the necessity of moving on".

Music video

The original music video for the song, posted on the Band's MySpace page, features sepia-toned, grainy footage of Tedder playing the piano and singing. A new video associated with the remix was filmed on September 14, 2007 and released in early October.[1] The video had its premiere on UK music channel 'B4'. This version was shot in a recording studio where it shows Ryan Tedder singing in the studio and the other band members playing instruments to the music and scenes from a New Year's countdown party. In a third version of the video, also associated with the remix, Timbaland is shown remixing the song while the camera circles OneRepublic. Timbaland mimes singing and conducting, even though he does not sing on the song and the track was recorded by the band a few months earlier. [2] The European version features clips of the film KeinOhrHasen, which stars Til Schweiger. The video made its broadcast debut on VH1's Top 20 Countdown on October 27, 2007. A third version done by a fan is also popular which uses the remix of the song. It entails a woman reading a letter from her lover, which can be seen in shadows singing into the phone. The letter contains the lyrics to the song. Throughout the video, multiple objects relating to love and relationship spin around then near the end of the song they all burst into flames. The video was completed by Aaron Platt and is on his website, aaronplatt.com [3]

A version of the song was featured on the Timbaland album Shock Value. This version contains a slightly different beat, using a sampled drum machine, and a sampled backing vocal. This remixed version received a good deal of radio play, and contributed to the song's overall popularity. It is sometimes credited to "Timbaland feat. OneRepublic"[9], though "OneRepublic feat. Timbaland" is the preferred credit.[10] Australian Idol 2007 winner Natalie Gauci sang the song during the final 2, she was named winner of this years Idol series on November 25 beating Matt Corby for the title. After the performance, she received positive feedback of her rendition of the song and recorded her version for her debut album The Winner's Journey.
