The Artist

Antonia Teodora Eiriz Vázquez was born in Havana, Cuba, on April the first of 1929. And died in Miami, Florida, U.S.A on march, 1995. She worked the following disciplines: engraving, painting, assambly, and drawing. Between 1951 and 1957 she did art studies at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas “San Alejandro”,Havana, Cuba. After graduated she taught at the National School of Art Instructors and during the second half of the sixties she was aldo teacher in the National School of Arts.

Individual Exhibitions

She presented her works in many individual shows, in a brief selection of this ones we can name "Naturalezas Muertas". Iglesia de Paula, Havana, in 1957. In 1966 took place a bipersonal exhibition "Antonia Eiriz/Raúl Martínez". Casa del Lago, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and in 1985 "Antonia Eiriz". Espace Culturel Latino Américain, Paris, France, In 1995 "Antonia Eiriz. La aspereza que precede al amor. Primer Homenaje Póstumo". Galería La Acacia, Havana, Cuba.

Collective Exhibitions

Eiriz's work has been showed in several collective exhibitions, the first one occurred in 1952, "28 Dibujos y Gouaches" at the C.T.C. Confederación de Trabajadores de Cuba, Havana. In 1960 she was invited to Segunda Bienal Interamericana de México. Palacio de Bellas Artes. Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno, México and in 1961 she was also invited at the VI Bienal de Sâo Paulo Museu de Arte Moderno. Parque Ibirapuera, Sâo Paulo, Brazil . After her dead her works were again exposed in 2000 at the exhibition named "La gente en casa. Colección contemporánea" during the 7ma. Bienal de La Habana. Havana Biennial, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba.

Awards

During her artistic career she was recognized with several awards some of them are: The Honor Mention in the VI Bienal de Sâo Paulo Museu de Arte Moderna, Parque Ibirapuera, Sâo Paulo, Brazil. In 1962-63 she obteined the First Prize in the Second Latinamerica Engraving Contest, Galería Latinoamericana, Casa de las Américas, Havana. In 1994 she was distinguished with the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship,New York, U.S.A

Her work is part of collections from several institutions such as Casa de las Américas, Havana, La Acacia Gallery, Havana, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba, and of the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, U.S.A.
