Angelo Bortolo Bertelli (June 18 1921 - June 26 1999) was an American football quarterback. He played six games for Notre Dame in 1943 before leaving to join the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded the Heisman Trophy for that season. He was nicknamed the "Springfield Rifle" because he hailed from West Springfield, Massachusetts, and he was one of the early true forward passers in college football. Angelo played for the Los Angeles Dons and Chicago Rockets of the All-America Football Conference after his service in the military. He owned a series of liquor stores in Clifton, New Jersey and in West Springfield. He died in 1999 and was buried in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair. [1]
