An anaerobic filter (AF) is a form of anaerobic digester. The digestion tank contains a filter medium which anaerobic bacterial populations can establish upon. Anaerobic filters are commonly employed in the treatment of waste waters. AF reactors are gaining in popularity versus more established aerobic waste water treatment systems as they produce less solid residue[1]. AF reactors can be combined with UASB reactors. These reactors are called hybrid reactors.
